Whilst considering some recent comments here and on various lists regarding standards for e-government, I thought I’d go to the ‘font of all wisdom’, in other words the Cabinet Office Govtalk site. Following document links on GovTalk, the Cabinet Office site for webbie standards I repeatedly find the message “this document has been archived”.
Whilst I do understand that the new government IT strategy will replace at least some of the existing standards when it’s finally agreed, isn’t it usual to archive standards and policies, once they’ve been replaced, not before?
You have given a nice example about the disjointed orchestration by the Cabinet Office. One part, championed by Martha Lane Fox, can espouse the absolute need for standards; where another part quietly removes them. None of the recent CIOs (Watmore or Suffolk) have done anything about it.
